Hiking in one of the most beautiful and most peaceful areas of the Alps

We are able to lace up our hiking boots all year round. Not surprising, then, that we are members of a group of hiker-friendly hotels called "Wanderhotels". Our owners personally ensure you will find the most beautiful places and scenic spots. In fact, Christian and Willi Daberer lead hikes twice a week from April to October. And let's not forget Sigrid, a hunter and expert in all things related to forests and alpine nature. All three of them have a lot to share with you.

Prefer to explore independently? Feel free! Tell us what you would like to experience and we will put together a hiking route designed just for you, including useful info about trail conditions, refreshment opportunities and more.

On other days, hike where the mood takes you. If you need ideas, our team at the reception desk love to hike and they know the Gailtal and Carnic Alps like the backs of their hands. Feel free to consult Willi & Christian Daberer as well. A little "rusty"? That's not an issue. A real "pro"? Excellent. We will come up with a hiking route that's made to measure. Based on weather conditions, your abilities and the time you have to spare.

The daberer is right in the middle of our hiking region. You never have far to go. Hike along the Karnischer Höhenweg. Or the Gailtaler Höhenweg. Stop in for refreshments at mountain huts along the way and experience first-hand what the life of a hill farmer is all about. Discover the most beautiful high meadows when they come into bloom. Some alpine flowers can only be found in Gailtal. Cross the border into Italy. Explore the fascinating Carnic Alps Geopark, or perhaps go hiking in the Dolomites for the very first time. Rest assured, boredom is never a factor. That is the quality promise of all Wanderhotels.

FaQs about Hiking

Here we have compiled the most important and most often asked questions about hiking for you.

Every season has its own special highlights in store. Springtime, when everything begins to bloom. Discovering Alpine hikes and hospitable mountain huts in summer. The endless visibility of autumn, as the region is bathed in radiant colors. And the more leisurely activities of winter.

In front of the daberer are the Carnic Alps. And behind our hotel, the Gailtal Alps. Wonderful hikes across the border into Italy are possible, while the Lienzer Dolomites are practically just a stone's throw away.

As part of our weekly activity program in summer, we offer guided hikes 3 times a week. In winter, we go cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and hiking together. In spring and autumn, we also lace up our hiking boots and take you along with us into our imposing mountain world.

If we could only emphasize one point about our hiking area, it would be about just how vast the Gailtal and Carnic Alps really are. It never feels overcrowded, you never have to stand in line. Here with us, you have a chance to stand proudly on the summit without a soul in the world to interrupt your mood.

Some hikes begin right here at the hotel. Otherwise, you can ride the regional bus for free with your Guest Card. We organize shuttle transfers for our guided hikes, while you have the option to ride a bicycle or E-bike to the start of your hike as well.

Families with children will also find just what they are looking for. Family-friendly hikes, down in the valley and up in the mountains. To area huts and tarns, through the forest. In many cases, you will even be able to push your pram along, too. Nature is transformed into a magical playground. For big and small.

Livestock are driven up into the mountains at some point between the beginning and middle of June. As soon as the animals are on their alpine grazing areas, the huts will open, too. An idyll you can enjoy until mid-September. Definitely something not to be missed.

The closest lifts are in the Nassfeld ski area, operating in winter for skiers and in summer for hikers. The valley station is barely a 20-minute drive from here. As for the valley which surrounds the daberer, it is absolutely undeveloped and pristine.

Mauthen is a village that is very popular with mountaineers and happens to be situated right in the middle of the Karnischer Höhenweg. The daberer is only a 5-minute drive away. At the beginning, the end, or somewhere in between, you are always welcome to combine your hike with a few days spent enjoying a daberer.timeout

Needless to say, that depends a little on the snow conditions. The hiking loops in the valley are generally very doable. Otherwise, you may wish to strap on a pair of snowshoes and explore the snowy winter landscapes at slightly higher elevations. Our weekly program includes guided snowshoe hikes that are ideal for exploring Gailtal together.
